"Mail to Family" was my entry to a comics contest held by The Comics Association of Oulu in 2014. The theme of the contest was 'polarnight'.
Unfortunately, this effort of mine proved overly ambitious: I experimented with dialog-free pages, flashbacks, conveying feelings and state of health via lighting and color, putting the pages together like a film editor, narration that deliberately sounded unintellectual, various kinds of transitions, and all this stuff, but I couldn't make the storytelling work the way I wanted. I also had to rush the lettering because of deadline. That was a disaster, there's no way around it.
It was all so unsatisfactory by the end, I still haven't shown the finished product to anyone. (My sister excluded, and even she was like, "Uh, fascinating...")
But, no matter how lacking it was overall, I congratulate myself for going out of my comfort zone and pushing the envelope of my own creative thinking (if only to realize I'm not the underrated mastermind of my generation). I also believe it's the best work I've ever done from an illustration-point of view.
So, even if you have no clue about the context, enjoy the samples. Maybe there's something to be found in them.
